Taking a break

I hate taking breaks from running.

I hate that I had to admit to myself last week that taking a break would be the best thing.

I hate that even though I know rest is the best thing, I just want to be out running.

I hate that the weather has been perfect for running lately (60F and sunny).

I hate that my knee is bothering me.

I hate that I have been such a slacker on cross training since the spring.

I hate that my right quad is smaller than my left.

I hate that my hamstrings are so tight and I am so inflexible.

But...

I know that going to spin class each week is good for me.

I know that my legs love yoga on Mondays.

I know that taking a break from running now is better than taking a break in March or May or July.

I know that I need to cross train even after I am healed.

I know that I will not get "fat" because I took a break.

I know that my legs deserve a rest after a great year of running.

I know that I enjoyed sleeping in this weekend instead of getting up predawn for a run.

I know that I will be running again before I know it.

So its cross training for a few more days.  Then maybe a test run.  And definitely going to spin class this week.  Other wise I'll be seeing a lot more of the elliptical.  But I think I am ok with it.  I have to get healthy for next year and that's what is important.

Aww. Feel better. I didn't run this weekend either. I just needed a mental break from training. And all your cross training will make you a better runner.

That's a great attitude. You're right..your body needs it and will thank you for it. A little off now to save a lot of time off later!

It's so so so so hard not to run when it's beautiful out, but you are smart for listening to your body and recognizing when it's time to take a break.

Hope your knee is feeling better soon!

I always find that I look forward to "no running" periods when I am in my hardest training, but then when they arrive all I want to do is run. Strange how that works. ;)

I hate taking breaks too but it's the smart thing to do! And spin class sounds fun! Enjoy it! :)

I know it's hard to think about taking a break right now -- but I find that I run my best after a little break. And especially if you are having pain. Enjoy this time off getting back into spinning and yoga. This small time off will go by quick and you will be stronger and ready to run again in no time!

Taking a break is always hard, but you are right to do it. You'll miss it but when you run again you'll love it all the more. Take care of yourself!
