Total Bust

So I went to the Doctor's yesterday and basically it was a waste of my time.

See, my old doctor retired last year so I am currently switching to a new doctor closer to my new apartment but I had to go back to my old doctors office to get things cleared up. Plus I could get an appointment at this doctors a lot sooner than I could at a new place.

Well I got there and all the usual stuff happened at first but then I never got to ask any questions. I barely got a word in edge-wise with this doctor who has taken over. It was a total bust and a huge disappointment.

My old doctor was a woman and yesterday I had a man - hate to stereotype the men out there but HE would NOT LISTEN to me!! I was so frustrated! I need a referral to go to the PT but if I can't even talk about my knee then how am I supposed to get a referral...

I really don't know what to do. I have a new patient appointment on September 4th with my new doctor so hopefully that will be well. I kind of want to run but at the same time I don't. I am scared that the pain will come back.

Now I guess I will just play the waiting game for another 2+ weeks : (

Swimming this morning = 1100 yards and my lungs feel really tired. Happy Tuesday!

So sorry to hear about your crappy doctor. I feel so lucky that my doctor is a woman, a listener and best of all a RUNNER!!! It makes it so much easier! I hope you find someone new/better soon!

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me when I needed to go get my knee checked out!!! My reg doc went in to specialized radiology and left the general practice and the new guy they assigned me to WOULD NOT LISTEN TO ANYTHING I SAID. When I asked for a referral to a specific place that had been recommended to me by athlete's he brushed it off and sent me to a place that the PT didn't even know how far a marathon was!?!? WTF. I really hope your new doc works out and you can get a referral to a place that actually knows what they are doing! Sorry about the crappy appointment! :( Keep up the swimming til you get it figured out...

Ug, crappy doctors are the WORST. Good luck with the swimming. It's not running, but you're doing great!

Sorry to hear that the appointment was such a bust. What is with doctors not listening?!?? Here's hoping your appt with the new doc goes MUCH better.

I would've been a huge bitch and MADE him listen to me. Esp. since it's costing YOU money. What a jerk.

Oh no!! So sorry buddy. How frustrating... My old knee doctor in college was close with the University so he treated me like GOLD. I would be so frustrated to be with a Doctor who won't listen.

You could jog and see how it feels?? Or aqua jog, have you ever tried that? GReat workout and less impact. Some pools have the aqua joggers.

Recently discovered your great blog! Sorry to hear about your appointment. Just like there are different people out there, there are doctors who practice with different styles. I know...I've worked with many. There is another doctor out there who is perfect for you. Good luck with the next appointment!

I sure hope you can get back out on the roads again soon. You might want to see if you can find a Primary Care Physician with a specialty in sports medicine. They'll be stoked to look at a screwy knee after prescribing antibiotics to snotty kids all day.

That is the worst! I can't stand it when docs don't listen. So not right. Good luck on the 4th -- I hope that is a better appt.

Ooh, not fun to leave not knowing anything more than you did to start off with :( I'm sorry!! I hope the next visit is more successful!

I hope your next doctor takes some time to listen to you. Holding off on the running is a smart thing. Keep cross training.

Ugh. Sorry to hear about your experience. With capitated lives these days, a doc gets paid some $s wheter he sees you or not. Then he gets paid more based on what he does during his encounter. He obviously wanted to do a major workup on you so he could bill insurance. I'd find a new doctor....

I hope your knee starts to get better soon. As an ex-track athlete who also has a knee problem, I can understand your frustration. I imagine it's just missing running it's not knowing what the situation w/ your knee in general.

What your doc did was not only inconsiderate, but IMHO violates the Hippocratic Oath they have to take.

I hope your injury is purely mechanical - that is, that your injury is one that hurts now, but you'll be able to do physical therapy and recover completely. Mine started out as a physical injury, which we have discovered was also nerve damage. If your knee continues to hurt, I really hope you do not develop the same condition I have (see my blog for details).

Which part of the country are you in? Like I said before, I have a knee problem as well; if you're in the Los Angeles area I can recommend a number of knee specialists for you to visit. I also know some great physical therapists I would be happy to recommend as well.

Here's hoping you'll get it sorted out soon! Hang in there!

Don't worry, I hear you - ANnoying when old men or just those that won't listen are your doctor and you waste time!
