Busy Friday

After all day meetings for group projects, I was able to make it to track. I got to the locker room and all the girls were going crazy. This is the first time I have been in there with so many people and it was a mad house! Then our head coach had a big surprise for us when we got to the meeting spot. He was giving out all the old warm ups, uniforms and sweatshirts! I was able to snag a nice white long sleeved shirt and gray sweatshirt with Track and Field on it!! Also I got an old warm up jacket and wind pants! I am not sure if I will even wear these but its always fun to get free stuff!!

Today's workout was limited as the indoor track was taken over for an event. We did a 3-2-2-1 (laps) with rest in between while sprinting the straights and jogging the curves. Then we lifted lower body and by that time it was almost the end of practice. B-Rabbit had his first meet today so I went over to the pool after practice to watch. He competed in the 200m medley and swam the first leg which was backstroke. His split was 27.33 and apparently that is bad but I was just proud of him that he got in there and swam the best he could! Tomorrow and Sunday he has more events and as this is the first swim meet I have ever seen I am excited!!

Tomorrow I am going to see how far I can go and how long I can go on the treadmill!! hehe It should be interesting!!

Have a great weekend everyone and GOOD LUCK to everyone racing this weekend!!!

TIART: My Running Dream

We all have the dreams of running fast, winning the race, hearing the crowd cheer! But as I have grown and matured I have learned a lot about myself as an athlete. Of course I would love to hear the crowd cheer for me but often it isn't all about winning. I feel that it is about doing the best you can on any given day, thinking the positive thoughts, knowing your strengths, and believing in yourself.

Sure I want to win, I love to win but as I have found out from running college track and field, I am no longer the best as I was in college basketball. I have to work hard for every inch, for every second and the feeling of actually doing my best is enough to give me a great sense of accomplishment.

So this year, my one and only year of college track I have a few dreams: (in no particular order)
1. Run my race, and do my best!
2. Enjoy every moment with my girls from the team
3. Be the first girl to participate in Heptathlon at my school!
4. Run on the relay team, and run through the pain (see below)

I had some extra time before it was time to go to practice after my class so I headed to the library. It was nice to just sit with no interruptions and read my book (Dean's 50/50 book). I can across a little section that I want to share because it really relates to my desire and dream to run through the pain (not like injury pain, but the pain at the end of a sprint race - Not giving up). For me this is what its all about:

"Building mental toughness really comes down to saying yes with your heart when your body says no, and getting the job done despite the pain." Just like we used to say during my high school soccer games, When your legs get tired, Run with your Heart!

If you can dream it, you can do it. It's all about positive thinking.

Ok I have rambled on enough - I really could keep going and going though!

Practice has been fairly easy - yesterday we worked on running out of blocks and today we did baton handoffs as well as 400m repeats and then a 200m sprint. We ran on the older indoor track which has super tight turns but still ran fairly fast. We then maxed out on bench press again - I could do 100lbs just fine once but then when I tired 105lbs I just couldn't do it. But I can tell that I am getting stronger so at the very least its a little progress! Tomorrow we have some nice 200m repeats.

Happy Thursday! The weekend is just around the corner!

Tuesday Recap

Yesterday at practice I got caught by my coach and made to go with the hurdle group. Now I have not practiced hurdling since the summer and prior to that I hadn't hurdled since high school! I was a little nervous at first since my form is rusty.

We warmed up and then practiced with our lead leg and trail leg individually. I was getting very discouraged because I wasn't able to do these exercises the right way. I haven't felt this upset in a while and I wanted to quit and just join back up with the sprinters but that was definitely not an option. Eventually I began to get my form right and stopped studder stepping up to the hurdles - the only problem now is that my right arm sticks out when I go over the hurdle instead of staying close to my body. Overall it was a good first day for me and I am hoping to get into my head coaches office today to discuss my actual events and training.

My second class got canceled this morning so I am just bumming around - I am still slightly sore from lifting but thankfully we have today off from the weights. B-rabbit had his first swimming practice yesterday since his surgery and it went well. They have a meet this weekend so the practices are lighter which works out great so that he wont push himself too hard.

It seems like all distance running has evaporated from my workouts but I plan to hit the gym hard this Saturday morning for a nice long run on the treadmill. I plan to bring my big, clunky 60 GB ipod (this will be interesting for sure) and settle into a nice 8:15 minute/mile pace for at least an hour! Then I will go and watch B-Rabbit swim some of his races before hitting up the mall to finish all my Christmas shopping! Yes I have homework to do but senioritis has hit me hard and I plan on saving things to the last minute!!

My mom emailed me today - the doctor called back with my second of three blood tests. Apparently I have a very low count for B vitamin and so I have to start to take a B-complex vitamin. I haven't been feeling as tired since I stopped working before Christmas but I still have one more blood test coming back about my Vitamin D levels.

OK I am out! Happy Running!

Track Practice

Well I am back into the swing of things. Yesterdays practice went well but I really pushed myself too hard and felt that familiar achy pain in the back of my knees. We did a super long warm up after the Coaches talked to us about expectations for the season. Then we did 2x (120m and 150m sprints at 80%) with a 200m walk for recovery after both sprints then 200m sprint at 60% with 200m walk recovery then 100m sprint and a cool down. I felt like I was going almost 100% just to keep up with Abby - Not my best idea. My legs did feel great though for most of it because I had taken the time to rest over the break.

We then went and lifted upper body and I plan to max out once again probably later this week. I am hopeful that I will be able to get over 100lbs. Also I am looking for team warm ups - we want ones that are warm and kind of like the nike or brooks zip up tops and bottoms. Any suggestions on a good website to look at? Otherwise I am hoping my Coach has some connections!

In the theme of December and Christmas, I started reading The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder last night. It is a very cute Christmas book that has one chapter for each day starting Dec. 1st and going to Dec 24th. I suggest picking it up - its good for children and adults and definitely gets you into the Christmas spirit!

I am headed off to Day 2 of practice soon! Have a great day!

Back to School

The last few days since Thanksgiving have been busy - I am back at school and started classes today : ( It is hard to get back into the mind frame of having to study and do homework when I am so used to having my nights and weekends free!

Today is the first official day of Track practice! I am slightly nervous since all the cross country girls will be there and I hope I can still run fast and be on the relay after a lazy week off. I didn't run Friday, Saturday or Sunday to allow my muscles to heal. The doctors visit went well - all my blood tests came back ok and all my vitamin levels are good so I am assuming that it must have been the stress of a job plus trying to be a college athlete!

Saturday I joined B-rabbit and his family as they went and picked out a Christmas tree. It was quite a nice time - I especially like hanging out with his sister as she always makes me laugh! Sunday I put up the tree at my parents house with B-rabbit. We had a nice time and took several Christmas pictures which turned out very nice! Last night we wrapped presents too - I just love wrapping - I am so excited for Christmas!!

I finally tried on my tech shirt from the race and guess what it actually fits - it fits really well!! The sleeves are perfect with the shoulder seams hitting right on my shoulder as well as the shirt hitting well below where my shorts start! I love it - its a nice blue color and I cannot wait to run in it! Finally a t-shirt that fits me correctly!! Maybe it is because I actually ordered a Women's medium shirt - last year I got a Men's small I think and it was huge! The t-shirt is that Nike FIT dry and it is super comfy!

Since it is now December, looking back at November my mileage decreased A LOT!
November total = 60.68 miles
I wasn't able to get in any long runs over about 6.5 miles which is mainly to blame in the drop off. This month should be about the same if not a little less as I have my first track meet December 12th!!

Anyway thats all for me now - I feel so disorientated sitting in classes and actually having to pay attention for more than 10 minutes at a time! And not having constant access to Google reader as well as my email! Happy December!
