It's a sad day

First off...I totally forgot my blog birthday/anniversary thingie. It was July 18th and you can read my very first post here.

Next, here is my 8 week training plan for the Half marathon that is on September 13th.

The sad thing is that I don't think I will even be able to use it.

After yesterdays 3 mile run and this mornings failed interval workout I think its time for me to stop running, take a rest, and see if my knee can heal.

It could be runner's knee, it could be IT band problems...who really knows. I do know that it hurts when I run, it hurts a lot. It's an irritating pain right on my knee cap and sometimes on the sides. And the pain lingers even after I am finished running.

I plan on starting to swim to keep myself in shape and also to keep me sane. If I didn't have some sort of exercise to do instead of running I would be freaking out!

This is really hard to say that I am going to stop running for a while, and the fact that I don't know how long I will have to sit on the sidelines makes it worse. But I do know that I was able to run the Boilermaker this year (although that may be the reason why I am in so much pain) and there will be more races in the future. As long as I can run pain free I will be happy, whenever that day is!

Thanks for all your kind words of support, I really appreciate it!! Happy Wednesday!

That happened to me. I registered for an April HM and had way too many shin issues so I skipped it and stopped runnning, switching over to biking and elliptical. A month of that and 250 bike miles, I was healed and came back running stronger than ever. Taking a break is okay. It's tough, but it's good for you when an injury hinges on it.

J-oh no!!!!! first of all, get yourself seriously to a massage therapist or art person. i'm not kidding, when i had crippling knee pain after my half marathon last year a killer leg massage got rid of it completely. also think about sneakers and maybe you need a new pair?

time off- a week maybe? of just swimming will probably also make a HUGE difference. do not fear!!!!!! i have loads of hope stored up just for you!!!!!!!!!!! you'll be back at that schedule eventually!!!! and also... get some good books! :) those always help. i'm ready Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake now and i seriously get lost in it- in a good way! xoxo

Get well soon virtual training buddy. :( As soon as I saw your training plan, I thought immediately that it was Hal Higdon, is that right? That's what I've used for the 1/2 I've done the last 4 years... hopefully it'll only take you a week or 2 to be back in the game. With your fitness level, you could still train in the 6-7 weeks left.

Oh girl! I feel your pain. Being stuck on the injured list is the most discouraging, unbearable, depressing, (you get the drift) position to be in once you've caught the running bug. Try to stay positive and more importantly stay active!!! Don't let yourself get down in the dumps by doing nothing at all. Give it time, give it rest and you'll be back in those running shoes before you know it!!!

Hang in there girl. Maybe it will go away in a week or so. Go to doc?

Sorry to hear about your knee. But, a nice break sounds needed. Time to let your body heal. You have been very busy this past year.

It's a letdown but sounds like the rest is much needed. Take care of yourself and you'll be back ready to kick some butt :)

I'm sorry about your knee problems. It sucks that you might need to stop running, but I've found that a good session in the pool and on the elliptical can really keep your cardiovascular strength up. And I also think resting will give your knees some time to heal itself, and hopefully that will minimize some of the pain. Just think about this time as an opportunity to try new activities, like swimming :)

Sorry J! :( Can you get into see a physiotherapist to see what they think? Get some exercises or maybe a massage?

Swimming will be great in the mean time, but I know it sucks not to run. Here's hoping it doesn't take long to be pain free!

Rest that knee up a bit and I bet you'll be back to running in no time!

Don't give up on your HM yet. You are doing the right thing resting up your knee, hope it heals quickly. Maybe change your shoes?

I think that making the choice to rest from running for a while is a good idea. Your knee symptoms kind of sound like mine did when I hurt it back in February. I ended up seeing a PT and was told that my quads weren't very strong. There are a lot of good exercises and strengthening routines out there that can help with this. That and stretching, yoga, and using the foam roller should help. I know that once I started doing the strengthening routines from TriPower book, things started to look even better for my knee.

Keep your head up, it will get better

Sorry about your knee, but don't be so haste in counting off the HM. Take a few days of rest and then re-evaluate. Sometimes just a few days (and some light stretching/massage/rolling) makes all the difference!

You're a very smart girl to sit back and figure out what the problem is. Sorry to hear there is a problem though...Ick.

Take everything in stride. It'll work out eventually.

taking it easy and giving your knee a break is tough, but it's better in the long run. :( here's to speedy healing!

I'm sorry things arent good right now, but it will get better i promise! Just remember a few weeks of no running is better than not running for the rest of your life. Drastic i know, but sometimes you can mess yourself up if you dont take some time off. I'm confident that you'll still be able to run, and if not then try again another time! I'm here for you girl! If you need someone to vent to i know how frustrating it can be. Hang in there.

Taking some time off is the right thing to do even if it's no fun. Swimming will keep you strong and may even help in recovering...

I had a similar problem in april/may and was out for about 3 weeks before running an incredible HM so you can do it. Feel free to browse my blog to see the details. Strengthening and stretching helps me deal with the knee condition.

I'm sure with a little rest you'll be fine. I know how injury's make you feel just horrible.

Amy said...

Oh no, that's terrible!! I suffer from runner's knee, too, and can understand how painful it can be. The pain can come out of nowhere! Just listen to your body and take it easy for a bit. Does the elliptical hurt it? Maybe you could do that, too.

Hey! So glad you stopped by my blog, I am just recovering from an injury so I know how very frustrating it can be. If you can get diagnosed, I swear you can come back at a pretty decent speed. It takes some dedication to PT though and a really good mindset :)

hope you stop by again! I've got lots of goodies and giveaways going on this summer, so that's reason enough right!

Booo :-(

Good for you for taking the time off. Better to take a little time off now than months and months down the road.

i am so sorry girl... but you are doing the right thing and being a smart athlete. hang in there and hopefully just a little rest will heal it up fast!

Believe me, I know exactly how you feel! But it's definitely better to give it time now and heal instead of powering through and developing a more serious injury. I had some knee issues a few years ago, and taking 3 weeks off and just swimming seemed to do the trick!
