Lots of Stuff

First off - I went to the gym this morning to run since it was icy outside. I am running along at a comfortable pace when a girl steps onto the treadmill next to me. She increases the speed rapidly and soon she is cruising along. I can't quite see, but I think she was going faster than my 8:30 min/mile pace. As she runs she holds onto the top of the treadmill. I cast weird glances at her wondering what she is doing!! This is the second woman I have seen at the gym do this! I just don't understand! Why are you holding onto the treadmill for dear life!!!?? Just turn down the speed!!

Second - I just finished a new book and a Christmas one at that! The Christmas Tree By Julie Salamon is a super quick read with just 115 pages. It was heart warming and a lovely story! Taken from Amazon.com:

The chief gardener at Rockefeller Center dreads Christmas because one of his responsibilities is the selection of the center's giant Christmas tree, which is not an easy job. Thus, he is thrilled one spring to have found the perfect tree so early and foresees no problem in persuading the nuns who own the property on which the tree stands to let him have it. Then he meets Sister Anthony, who came to the convent as a young orphan and made a close friend of the Norway Spruce she calls "Tree."

One last thing - It's getting cold outside! Check out this giveaway from Lisa Yarn's for a chance to win a hat and scarf!!!

Special Thank You to Tall mom for the Christmas Card! It made my day!!
Another special thank you to Lisa at Early Morning Run!! I won her holiday music giveaway and got the package this week! I brought all the CD's to work and have been listening to them while I do my mindless paper work!

Today is a super busy day! Enjoy the rest of the day!

That's weird because when I was on the treadmill on Monday, I had a guy in his 60's do the same thing. cranked it up to 7.5 mph and higher, running for dear life while holding on! crazy. I don't get it!

that book sounds like a great gift, i bet my mom would like it!!!!

i totally hear ya, don't understand the holding on to the treadmill thing. talk about bad form and injury potential. not to mention it just isn't accomplishing anything.

Sounds like a nice Christmas read!

I've seen people doing that on the treadmill and often wonder "WHY?" myself. It can't be comfortable...

I have a bunch of those weird treadmill holders at my gym too!!

I see people do that all the time! I'm glad I'm not the only one so confused! I also see it when people are walking fast on an incline.. which I guess is a little bit more understandable. I still find it weird.

You are very welcome. So you know how I helped make the rules for the Gift Exchange, I am TOTALLY behind on mailing my gift. UGH!!

Treadmill funny!

I've seen people do that, and I *think* they are doing it to check their heart rate. The treadmill at our gym is forever telling you to grip the hand rails so it can find your heart rate. So maybe...

Yeah I never understand that either?!?!? LET.GO. I don't count that as really running. Half the time they are holding themselves off up a little.

Julia said...

I think holding on would make running even harder...??? Or maybe I am a total clutz... but what's the point in even running when you're arms are doing half the work?

I've seen that before on treadmills too. My guess for the reason why people do it is it's when the person is too tired to run normally but feels that moving their legs is "good enough".

I've heard of people doing that on the treadmill too. Isn't that kind of cheating?

i also love those that do the elliptical or the stair climber, holding themselves up with their arms.. totally slouched over. i'm such a people watcher though in the gym -- it's really what gets me through the workout

Thanks for plugging my giveaway!

I could write a blog entry about the weird things I see at the gym. That is so bizarre.

I am so competitive - I always try to see how fast the person next to me is running, and it they are going faster, I try to go as fast as they do. I am a freak. I don't know why I feel the need to run as fast or faster than some random at the gym!

I only grab the top of the treadmill if I'm attempting to change the channel on the TV. And it takes a matter of seconds. And that's too long for my taste.

The book sounds like a good read. I'll have to check it out since I'm looking for a few quick reads before the end of the year.

why was she holding on? its harder to hold on becuase you arent pumping your arms therefore not getting the extra help. people amaze me sometimes. sigh.

i really need a gym membership- just so i can people watch and question peoples stupid antics. then i would have more interesting things to blog about! hahahaha

That is so funny!!! Why are they holding on to the treadmill? The things I miss seeing because I workout at home.

It totally irks me when people hold onto the treadmill. That is such bad form and will probably only make them get injured. Geesh!!!

That drives me nuts when I see people do that. I just don't understand!

EndorphinBuzz said...

At least she did fall or falter. I've had my share of near fall when I zoned out and stopped looking at where I was putting my feet.

X-Country2 said...

Yeah, but it's REALLY funny when people fall. :o)

Maybe she thinks that if she runs like that her legs will get use to it and soon she won't have to hold on...? I honestly have no idea. hahaha

I see a girl at my gym on the elliptical going about 700 mph but holding 80% of her body weight up with her arms on the armrest. I guarentee you won't be burning as many calories if you're only working aout 35 lbs. gym crazies, I tell ya....

I don't get why people on the treadmill do that either. Don't they know that putting all their weight on the bars defeats the purpose?

The Laminator said...

Yeah, no idea why anyone would want to run holding on to the handrails...

haha I've done this before!
