Fitting it all in and No race July

Last week was a marathon of all things wedding, but somehow with a little planning I was able to fit all my runs in.  Taking time for a run sometimes seems impossible but here are a few tips:

1. Schedule your run - I always put my run time on the calender.  That way I block out time in the day to get out and run before all the fun.

Last Friday's schedule - July 8th, 2011

2. Try to run in the morning - now with the temperatures soaring, running in the morning not only is cooler than in the afternoon, it also allows you to see great sunrises and get your run done first thing!

Morning run sunrise!

3. Lay out your clothes the night before - whether you are getting up in the morning to run or going to run club after work, laying out clothes is helpful.  That way if you are running in the morning, your clothes are all ready to go when you wake up.  And if you are running at night, all your clothes are packed so you wont forget something important (like socks or a sports bra) as you are rushing out the door!

Clothes laid out and ready to go!

No Race July

After my 10k race in June and not gaining entry into the Boilermaker 15k, I decided to make July a month of no racing.  I am trying to learn from my training mistakes of the past and thought this would be a good idea because:

  • Previous July's have been jammed packed with races leading to burn out and injury.
  • The heat does not agree with my stomach and after racing in the high temps I often feel sick for days.
  • July is a hot and humid month - enough said.
  • Focusing on workouts and enjoying the run may help to inspire me as to what I should train for next!

Any suggestions as to what I should train for next??  Have a great Monday!

It's amazing how much time it saves laying out clothing for the early morning run. Hot weather races are no fun-- you are making a smart choice.

I always leave my stuff out too - my brain does not work very well at that hour, so the less thinking I have to do THE BETTER!

Enjoy your month off from racing!

I get out the door so much faster in the mornings when I have everything laid out the night before and I don't have to make any decisions! Great job getting your run in and thanks for the awesome sunrise picture.

Your clothes are laid out way too neatly! Mine are all jumbled in a pile, but at least they are there ready to be put on. Enjoy your month away from racing.

I should totally lay my stuff out in the morn. That would be way better than waking up the manfriend while I'm digging through my drawers. I'm so with you on scheduling in a run. I had to get up at 6am on a Saturday a few weekends ago so I could get my sweat on before driving 2 hrs to a baby shower. I was happy I got it in before the day got going.

I also lay out my clothes the night before. I have to otherwise I feel like it takes me way longer to get ready as I have to figure out what matches etc (why does this even matter... No one really sees me when i run in the am!).

I'm not racing until late September. Can I get an Amen!?

You should try training for something fun that includes running, like a Tough Mudder or whatever. I hear those are fun!

I love that you scheduled your run in before all the festivities. That really is the ONLY way you will get it done. I've been slacking A LOT in the running department these days. Wedding stuff and training for a marathon both take a lot of time and planning. But with a little mental preparation, IT CAN BE DONE! :) Thanks for the inspiration!

laying your clothes out does help.. especially if you set them under your alarm... then if you hit snooze at least you thought twice about it! ;)

You are smart to learn from experience and not race this month. Doing too much in these hot months can be too taxing. I'm training for a half in September -- there are a ton of great ones in Sept and Oct. Maybe one would be good for you?
