Turkey Trot Race Report

I was going to post a picture from the race but I just discovered that I left my camera usb connector cord back at school! The one thing I forgot!!

The Turkey Trot went really well - I arrived with my whole family at about 9am and picked up my timing chip thingie and then proceeded to sit back in the car to stay warm. The race started at ten and so I warmed up a little bit prior to that but then standing around waiting for the start caused my muscles to get tight again. I was right in the middle of the pack - sorta near the front so I was in a nice warm pocket surrounded by warm bodies.

They started the race a little late but shortly after 10 we were off! I ran this race last year in the pouring rain but this year it was much nicer as there was no snow and the roads were clear. This year there was a record 1,800 participants in the 4.4 mile race and 2.5 mile fun run so the start was pretty slow. I just felt off from the start, my stomach and breathing didn't feel good but my legs felt strong. My first mile was about 8 minutes which was much slower than I wanted to go but I just thought to myself "OK this is better than going out too fast."

Most of the course was flat with a few downhills but three ugly uphills. The first hill was just after the 2 mile marker and I felt like I was dying but my legs just kept pushing. My second mile was run in 7:50 and I tried to stay with this guy who was running next to me. I lost him on the second hill which was a gradual incline through some neighborhood. I thought I was slowing down but passed the 3 mile mark at 23:35 which had my third mile at 7:25. I continued on and ran on a nice downhill for the middle part of mile 4 which definitely helped me but then there was the worst and last hill on the course. I maintained my pace up that hill and then headed towards the finish!

Here are my stats:
Finish Time: 32:46
Age group place: 7/60
Overall: 268/1096
And I was the 48th woman to cross the finish line!

So overall I was pretty happy! My pace was 7:27 min/mile and since I missed the mile 4 marker I am not sure about my exact pace. I really liked that I was able to have negative split through this race - I have never been able to do this as I always go out too fast. I also made sure to wear my bright orange shirt so that my parents and aunt and uncle could spot me at the finish! I think it worked because they all got pictures of me! This race was kind of sad as Winkly was supposed to run it with me. She went to PT on Wednesday but has failed to let me know how it went!!!!

There was one thing that I really didn't like about this race - it ends in a park and the grass is always muddy and wet to run through and I can never get any traction. I slowed down to run on it because I didn't want to get hurt. And this is why I never ran cross country! I am thinking that maybe next year I will try to find a different turkey trot to run in.

I got home and showered to warm up. One thing that bothers me after I run is how my pony tail always seems to get really tangled - it is such a pain to brush out! I just got my hair cut short on Monday but I still had that problem! Anyone else have this problem or a solution?

This morning I rolled out of bed and hit the mall with my mom at 5:15am and was back and having breakfast by 6:30! I have never been to the mall in the early morning on Black Friday so it was an experience. There wasn't anything we desperately needed but we wanted to beat the rush that would follow later on. I am going to go and eat some leftovers then take a nice long nap! Tomorrow I am off to B-Rabbits to help his family go and cut down a Christmas Tree (I haven't done this since I was little) and then help them decorate it!! I am very excited!!

Snow Running

Since I am on vacation this week I have gotten in a very lazy mood. I was supposed to do my sprint workout yesterday but decided that my legs needed a rest. Yesterday it was almost 40 degrees out with sun and no snow. This morning I woke up at 7am to get a head start and get to the track but it was blizzarding out!! I put off my running until 9am then finally headed down to the track with my mom.

Of course the track still had about an inch of snow on it but I was already dressed in all my gear and so I decided to just get it over with. I ran 3 laps warm up then did 3 laps of running/sprinting the straightaways and jogging the curves. My legs felt pretty good and I continued on with 4x400m. These 400s were SO slow! Although I had done 6 laps on the track already there was still alot of snow and where I had run my footprints were turning into mushy prints. So it was hard and I tried to run where there weren't already footprints so that I could get a little traction. I now know that I hate running in the snow!! I feel ready for the Turkey Trot tomorrow so I am hoping to finish under 34 minutes which would be at my slowest a 7:45 min/mile pace.

In other news, I have been Suzy homemaker here. I just finished crocheting a scarf and I am about to start another one for Christmas gifts and I also made two cross-stitch ornaments! I have been known to be crafty but this is crazy!! I am on a roll! My reading per day is now suffering due to my craftiness but I am reading Dean's 50/50 book FINALLY and it really good!

Anyway - Good luck to everyone running in races tomorrow! Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Winter Run

Well it sure is cold outside and I have gotten my dose of fresh air the past two days. I am now home for Thanksgiving and ran outside yesterday for 5.6 miles and today for 4.37 miles. I didn't time it yesterday but brought my watch today. I felt really really slow and my legs just felt tight and tired but somehow I ended up with a 7:14 min/mile pace. I am not sure how that happen....I am totally not used to hills and so the hills here at my house were TOUGH!!

Tomorrow I plan to get some 400m repeats in at the track and then take off Wednesday to rest up for the Turkey Trot on Thursday! The pain in my foot was sort of there during yesterdays run but I am not sure if my foot was just cold or if it was actual pain. Today it didn't hurt at all so I am assuming that it was just from running on the treadmill.

I am headed to the doctors soon to get blood work and talk to him about my training and effects on my body. Tomorrow I am going to pick up my packet for the race and also look at spikes for track!

Sorry for the sporadic topic post - I am trying to do way too many things at one time right now!! Happy Running!

Color and Cheesecake

Yesterday B-Rabbit and I had the "C" Date. We went and "colored" or rather painted pottery and then had dinner at The Cheesecake Factory which was amazing! Overall it was a lot of fun!

Next week we get to pick up the pottery and I am hoping they came out really nice!!

Friday I went to the gym and ran 5 miles (1 warmup, 3 hard Time = 22:17, and 1 cooldown) then I lifted and also went swimming (500 yards). I was pretty tired but had already made plans to meet a former bball teammate to go and watch a local college team play. Satuday I hit the gym as well since it was 17 degrees (feels like 9) outside! Yikes! I started on the treadmill but my left foot was hurting (the same foot that has been hurting during the indoor track runs). I stopped and did the bike and eliptical where I didn't feel any pain. I am planning to get a run in today and so I hope that my foot doesn't hurt. I am slightly worried about it - I don't know what it could be??

Have a good Sunday!!

TIART: Giving Thanks

Today's theme at Runners' Lounge for Take it and Run Thursday is why we are thankful for running!
  • I am thankful for running because without it I would be a complete mess mentally, emotionally and physically!
  • I am thankful for running because it brought me closer to my best friend Winkly.
  • I am thankful that after 13 years of being involved in soccer, basketball and track I am still able to run and have had no major injuries.
  • I am thankful for all the support from everyone who reads this blog.
I went to practice yesterday and as soon as I started running I had this horrible pain in my lower abdomen. I still ran the 200m repeats and a short cool down but then called it quits and headed home to lay on the couch. After running I felt slightly better but I can still feel a dull pain this morning. So I am taking today off from all exercise and hopefully all my internal stuff will work itself out. I am also leaving work early (as this is my second to last day) and heading home to curl up for a nap.

Last night I talked to B-Rabbit about the pressures of sprinting (since he is a sprinter in swimming). It is hard for me to get used to the fact that I need to train differently than I am used to. I feel extreme pressure to preform because I am the oldest girl on the team as well as the fact that this is my only chance to participate in Track.

My plan for the next week will include lots of long relaxing runs as well as the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. I think that the rest and relaxation is exactly what I need. Plus I will be heading to the doctor for a little checkup and blood work to make sure that I am not deficient in any vitamins or nutrients. I eat small meals with protein and carbs every 2 to 3 hours but maybe I am missing something?? Not sure.

One more thing - A few of you may remember me mentioning the Alphabet Dates that B-Rabbit and I go on. It is my turn once again and we are on to the "C" date which will be this Saturday and I am pretty excited about it!

Happy Thursday!

Disappointed

I was not looking forward to writing this post - I was pretty upset after running the mile yesterday. Honestly I should never have even attempted it as my legs were still shot from the speed workout/practice Monday but I didn't realize this until after I had finished running. Here are my 400m splits (in minutes with seconds):

400m: 1:25
800m: 2:58 (1:33 split)
1200m: 4:41 (1:43 split)
1600m: 6:29 (1:48 split)

It is very plain to see that I dropped off and died for the second half of the run. I was right on track and feeling good at the half way point. It was really hard to run this alone and inside on the indoor track. I think that I would have run it faster had I run with someone and I would have run it even faster had I run it outside. Besides my legs hurting for pretty much the whole run, the air was so dry inside that I couldn't breathe once I finished and then proceeded to hack up a lung the rest of the night.

So this was a big fat failure on my part but I really should have known better. I have been driving my body into the ground lately with workouts. After tonight's workout I plan on scaling back on the sprinting and working on more distance runs.

Now I am going to be extremely honest and personal:

I am seriously doubting my abilities and my running in the 4x400m relay. I just don't know how I will be able to run a competitive 400m race. I don't even know if I am capable or if it is even possible for me to run that fast. I am a super Debbie Downer today!

And I just burnt my breakfast toast! Ok enough whining from me! Today is a new day and I am going to try to not think about the past and just focus on the future and have positive thoughts. Hope everyone has a good Wednesday!

Lunch Workout

Yesterday I gleefully left work before noon and headed to the indoor track. This would be my first running workout in the middle of the day. There were only a few people there but we warmed up like usual. Coach gave us the choice to do speed work instead of the 400m repeats and the boys voted immediately to skip the 400s.

We did 100m sprints then walk for 100m for rest - each of these sprints was timed. I started in lane 4 but after two sprints my left big toe hurt a little bit so I switched out to lane 5. Here are my times in seconds:

15.7, 15.2, 14.4, 15.2, 15.1, 15.2, 16.1

I was very happy to run a sub 15 second 100m because I have never done that before but as you can see I am not a short distance sprinter at all! Abby was running 13.9 second 100m for most of them and she was sick! You can see my time dropped off for the 7th sprint but that is why we timed them to see where my drop off point was and therefore the time for me to stop. It is a good baseline to improve upon.

The indoor track killed my left leg though - that was the leg on the inside of the turns. Once I was finished I had pain in the back of my knee and Coach said that is a sure sign of over usage. The pain was gone about 15 minutes after my cool down and I don't feel anything today.

I did enjoy the lunch workout because it made the day go by so much quicker and I was much more focused when I got back to work. I don't think I could do it everyday but it was nice for a change of pace.

Today I will be doing a timed mile and maybe some 400s if I feel up to it as well as lifting. I ran the timed mile back on August 21st and finished in 6:32 but there were some complications. I hope I can run a sub 6 minute mile but a PR (under 6:11) would be just as good!

Tonight the Women's basketball team has their first game of the season - I will be making an appearance especially since they are playing against my old coach! Hopefully this time I wont get all freaking emotional and stuff when I see them playing.

Enjoy the snow if you have some like I do here!!

I want the Weekend back!

My Weekend Recap -

Friday:
Went to work like usual and actually worked hard and accomplished something. I proudly showed my boss all that I had gotten done and his response - "Uhh that's good but we really would like this other thing to be done." Well I was not very happy about that and since I had worked through lunch because I was on such a role, I left early and went to practice!

Practice was good - we did 6x100m repeats and I worked on running/sprinting on my toes. I decided to do this because when I arrived at practice my coach came up to me and said - "Make sure you work on sprinting, make sure you run with the sprinters because we really need to make you into a sprinter as you are a middle distance runner." OH REALLY!??? I could have told you that like 2 months ago! And seriously what have I been doing - I run with the sprinters everyday!!!

B-Rabbit and I went to dinner after practice and then to see the James Bond movie, which has a very good theme song with Jack White and Alicia Keys!

Saturday:
(I woke up sore from running on my toes at practice the previous day) I went with my mom back to the college she graduated from for the first time in many years. We went to the football game in the pouring rain and I got soaking wet!! It was fun though because my mom showed me where she met my father and where she lived while she went to school! Sadly due to the rain I did not take any pictures but it still was a fun time with my mom.

Sunday:
Well I was supposed to get some cross training in but I ended up at the mall doing Christmas shopping with B-Rabbit. I am not sure though if taking two days off in a row is good for me even if I do workout Monday through Friday.

Other odds and ends:
Today's practice is at noon so I will be skipping out of work for an extended "lunch" which will include some 400m repeats indoors as it is about 33 degrees outside! YAY for lunch time workouts!

I have decided that I am going to try and run a timed mile sometime soon to see if I can break a 6 minute mile. My best is 6:11 which I ran my freshman year in college - I would have ran an even faster time last year in basketball but my coach made us run the mile just 8 short hours after our first intense practice!

Ok I am off to hydrate like crazy and maybe do some work! Hope everyone had a good weekend! Have a good Monday! (Honestly I am really not that cheery in the morning)

Good News

WINKLY STARTED A BLOG!!! I am so excited!!

She is currently out of commission from running due to an IT band problem but she is going to physical therapy soon. So check out her blog - Grasshopper's Trails - and give her any helpful hints for her recovery!!

Have a great night!

Run, Bike, Lift

Thank goodness it's Friday!

For my workout yesterday I had planned to run my regular 3 mile loop and try for about a 7:45 pace. I got a text from my teammate, Alison asking if I wanted to meet her to spin and lift. I left work, changed my clothes and headed right out for the run which I ended up doing at a 7:30 pace but it felt good cause the weather was nice.

I got back to my apartment and changed my clothes then walked to meet Alison at the gym and we spun on the bikes for a bit - this is the first time I ever did this and I should have brought a book or something cause it gets kind of boring but it was a good cool down. I think B-Rabbit and I are going to the gym Sunday to bike so I will be sure to bring a magazine or book to keep me company!! After spinning we lifted and I can definitely feel it today added on from the soreness I already felt from lifting Tuesday!

Today is supposed to be really nice out so it will be a nice practice but most of the team has gone home for break - Abby said she would be there so I will have a running buddy. I am taking Saturday off and spending some time with my mom! Have a good weekend!

TIART: Running Green

This week at Runner's Lounge the theme for Take it and Run Thursday is Running Green.

For my contribution this week I would like to focus on how my mom is running/walking green. As a few of you may remember my mom used to be a runner before she had me. She grew up in the time before Title IV when there weren't many sports options for women. She was able to participate in archery and badminton and then found running after she married my dad.

Now she just walks (usually about 3-4 miles a day) and she carries a plastic grocery bag to pick up cans. Last year she collected over 70 dollars worth of cans and eventually bought herself a new pair of walking shoes. How about that!! Pretty amazing!

So here is to my mom - a great, inspiring woman who has taught me to recycle! I wouldn't be who I am today without her!!

Marathons

I think I was a little harsh yesterday about the marathon.

I was lying in bed last night and thinking about the pros and cons of running a marathon.

Yes it would be a fun experience
Yes I love running with Winkly

BUT

No I do not want to lose any toenails
No I do not want to get injured, etc

So here's my new attitude and thinking...

IF Winkly can come up with a good marathon and it fits perfectly into my life and everything just works out then I will CONSIDER running one. Also everyone must give me advice on how to NOT lose any toenails while running a marathon (I am cringing just thinking about it). Of course this is still up in the air but I am trying to have a positive attitude and be open minded.

Also, I started reading my Runner's World magazine and I realized that I do love the articles but also I love all the motivational advertisements. For the December issue, look at the back outside cover - the NIKE ad pretty much sums up my life and I think every other runners life too.

OH MY GOODNESS

Just got an email from Winkly (my half marathon running buddy) -

"I am DEFINITELY going to train this summer to run a full marathon. You in?! We're so doing it. I'm pumped!!!"

OH MY GOODNESS - SERIOUSLY??? FOR REAL!!!!!

This girl is crazy!!! What happened to just running the HM???

There is NO way she is going to get me to train with her for a marathon!!

Back to the Treadmill

Work went by pretty quickly yesterday and before I knew it I was back at my apartment. I put on my shorts, pants, running shoes and shirt, sweatshirt, and winter jacket! I added gloves and headed out the door to walk to the gym. I was debating whether to go and workout with the boys team but decided to workout on my own.

My workout:
Warm-up on bike for ten minutes - 3.60miles
Run on treadmill for 4.4 miles (34:50)
Lifting: Bicepts, Abductors, Tricepts, Leg Press, Bench Press, Shoulders

Usually when I run on the treadmill I feel tightness in my legs so that is why I added the biking. But when I was biking I felt pain in the back of my knees - similar to what I have felt with my hamstring problems. I felt good for the first 3 miles but the last 1.4 was rough. I decided to do 4.4 because that is the distance of the Turkey Trot I am running on Thanksgiving. Abby, from my team, lives close to the race so she said she would run it with me!! I want to run that race at about a 7:45 minute/mile pace.

Another thing that has been bothering me is my toes. My middle toe (mostly on my left foot) has been giving me pain. Usually it hurts only in the mornings or when I am not wearing socks. The pain starts when I put pressure onto the toes by walking. There is no bruising or swelling so I am not sure why they hurt.

B-Rabbit picked me up after the workout and we went to the grocery store - Besides some food, I picked up the new issue of Runner's World to read. I left B-Rabbit a few hints that I would love a subscription for Christmas!!

Have a good day - remember to stay warm and stretch those muscles!!

400m Repeats

I was a little nervous going to practice yesterday as I had planned out my interval times. I was surprised when my coach told us to scale back on the 400s this week because we were inside. Let me explain - the indoor track at my school (and probably at any other school too) is not as soft or "cushiony" as the one outdoors and so we are prone to getting shin splits or other injuries by running on it too much. Also since there is a curve every 50m we run on the outside lanes (to avoid injury) aka we run MORE.

Abby and I went first and were running in lane 4 so we found the staggered start. It had to be like 30 meters from the original start line. We ran our first 400m in 85 seconds and I was happy with that - not too fast and not too slow. I hand off the baton to Lauren - the freshman, she in turn hands off to Allison.

Allison comes around on her final lap and hands off to Abby (since I ran with the baton first) and I am running on the outside of lane 4. We are going much faster than the previous 400m and when we reach the finish I look at my watch - 88 seconds! So we ran slower? Uhhh I don't think so!!

The third 400m - I am running on the outside of lane 4 - we run it in 90 seconds but it feels faster than the previous run. In my head I am thinking - WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

So for the 4th one Abby and I get the baton and walk to the staggered start line and run the 400m. I look at my watch at the finish - 76 SECONDS!! I almost died on that one - we were going sooo fast and I was once again on the outside of lane 4, closer to lane 5!

For the 5th and final 400m we run from the original start line and the time is 90 seconds and I was DEAD. My arms/shoulders are screaming at me after just 100m and my legs do not want to move.

Abby and I walked 3 laps around the track for cool down - We determined that 3 out of the 5 intervals we ran HAD to be more than 400m. I was guessing about 30 meters extra. This morning I found THIS WEBSITE about track lane distances and how to calculate them. Apparently we ran 423.5 meters instead of 400...so that pretty much explains everything. I was ready for bed at about 7pm last night since I was so exhausted.

I now appreciate running on the outdoor track so much more and will miss it for the next 4 months : (

This is finals week at school so the girls are working out this morning while I am at work - the "feels like" temp today isn't supposed to get above 34 degrees so I haven't decided what I will be doing for a workout or where I will be doing it.

Slacker

I did not run this weekend and I liked it!

After six days in a row of running and not preforming up to my expectations in the time trials I assumed that I needed a rest (both Saturday and Sunday). Today I am back at it with practice - INDOORS! First time all season we have to run the 400m repeats on the indoor track (that means twice as many laps since its a 200m track instead of 400m like the outdoor one).

Goals: I will be running 7x400m today - no excuses! And I will be running negative splits!!

The Baton

I am trying to think happy thoughts and not complain about it being Monday and being at work...its not working very well. I did not have coffee this morning....

Time Trials

Thank you to everyone for your kind and encouraging words and advice for my time trial.

Yesterday was a pretty rough day at work for me - my company laid off all the temp workers as well as a lot of technicians. One guy was practically fired right in front of me and this was a wake up call that "real life" is hard! So I was just in shock all day at work and hoped that running at track would make me feel better.

I ended up running the 600m and the 300m but it didn't turn out as well as I wanted. I decided this was the best way to go for me cause there is a possibility that I could run the 800m and 400m in a meet. The bad part was that I was the only girl running the 600m so I had no pacer and went out too fast. Then I had to run the 300m alone again cause all the other girls had run it right after I finished my first race.

600m - 2 minutes flat
300m - 50 seconds

I realized as I was running the 300m that I hadn't been warmed up enough prior to racing and that messed me up big time. The only good thing that came out of this is that theoretically I know I can run the 400m in a good time. I know I still have a lot of training to do and improvement to make.

I maxed out on bench press - one rep at 100 lbs (previous I did two reps at 90 lbs for my max two weeks ago) so I can see some slight improvement there but the next few weeks I need to keep lifting and not slack off even though it will be the holidays.

Hope everyone has a good weekend!!

I have a new running idol

Last night after an easy workout, I made toasted cheese and tomato soup and sat down on the couch to catch up on all the TV that I have missed this week. I finally was able to watch the recap of the NYC Marathon - I had goosebumps through the whole thing. Of course I knew that Paula Radcliffe was going to win but I didn't know about the American runner, Kara Goucher.

I think I remember hearing something about her at the Olympics but I never saw her run until last night. I was amazed that she had never run a marathon before and managed to place third at NYC which is the first podium finish for an American woman since 1994! She is now my new favorite runner!

Yesterday's easy run has left me feeling ready for time trails today at practice. Apparently I cannot run a 400m - my choices are:

1. 600m and 300m
2. 300m and 150m
or some other combination of those

So which ones should I run?? I feel like the 300m is a good choice but I am not sure about a 600m. I have really never run these distances so I am not sure what to expect - Any suggestions are welcome!!

Happy Friday!

TIART: Transitions

This weeks theme at Runners Lounge is Running Through Transitions.

Now that I sit down and think about it, I have more transitions in my life than I initially realized.

First - the biggest transition - in two weeks my specified time for working at this company will be over and I will head back to school for my final classes on December 1st. I have 5 classes left to take before I graduate in May 2009 and with a full time position already accepted I am going to have to work hard to stay focused and get good grades!!

My body has also started to show some changes - I am losing my "basketball body" and turning into a sprinter. I am learning how to run faster and more efficiently and also how to compete in a relay. The hand off (transition) with the baton from one runner to the next can be the most important part! On that note - Friday we are doing another time trial at Track!

--------

At yesterday's track workout something just seemed to click - My coach has been talking about working on pulling my legs up while sprinting. A lot of runners tend to hit their butt with their feet when they run but that will slow you down. We ran 7x200m repeats and about halfway through I focused on pulling my legs and it worked. I maintained an even pace for the last few - about 34-36 seconds for each 200m run and although I was breathing hard at the end of each sprint I wasn't totally spent which means I am running more efficiently and increasing my endurance.

Today Abby and I are going to go for a slow 2.5 mile run as we want to be rested for the time trials Friday. When I first ran the 400m back on October 11th I ran it in 71 seconds and it was FREEZING out!! Expected temps on Friday at 4pm =65 degrees!!

Also I got some comments asking how I find the time to read??! Well since I am not taking classes I have no homework so I have a lot more free time. Usually while taking classes I spend a good 5-6 hours on homework a night because otherwise I would never be able to get my work done. Anyway - Have a good Thursday!!

Lists

1. I finished another book - It's Not About The Bike by Lance Armstrong. I LOVED it. I never knew the details of his story but after reading this it made me appreciate my ability to run everyday. Enjoy the small things, the simple joys. One question though - in the book he is so in love with his wife Kristen and now they are divorced!! What is up with that!! Why did they split??

2. Practice tonight - 200m repeats. My legs feel funny right now - I woke up with an achy/tingly feeling in my left ankle but no serious pain. weird....

3. Winkly (aka my half marathon running/training buddy) will turning another year older this Sunday!! She is so cute and I am very happy that I get to celebrate her birthday with her!

4. A little over a month until the first Track Meet!!

5. Is it the weekend yet??

Happy Wednesday!

Quick Update!

Yesterdays sunset = 4:58pm therefore we were running in the dark for the end of the track workout as the sun had set and my silly school doesn't have any lights on the track. Seriously I could run the college better than the people in charge here!!

After a rough day at work it was nice to just get out and run and the weather was perfect. Abby and I ran the 400 repeats together again and we went out too fast.

81, 78, 83, 85, 80, and 86 seconds. We were supposed to do 7x400m this week but we were feeling it on the last one so we opted out of it. The girls cross country team was there doing repeats as well (8x400m at 82 second pace with 95 seconds rest - INSANE!!!) so Abby and I were feeling the pressure to run fast. Those first two repeats killed us and then on the 5th one we ran with the XC team and it hurt bad. The good thing is that we can see that there is improvement in our times.

I am heading home tonight to vote and so I went to the gym with my roommate this morning. My legs were dead and so I only did 2 miles on the treadmill then lifted. We are once again maxing out this week on the bench press and I can tell that I am stronger. After running 13.14 miles in 3 days (Sun, Mon, Tues) I definitely will need the next 24 hours of rest.

October Mileage - 75.48 (slight drop off from previous months)

Book Review

Now many of you know my personal feelings about marathons but that doesn't mean I don't love to read the race reports or stories. A few weeks ago I picked up First Marathons: Personal Encounters with the 26.2-Mile Monster by Gail Kislevitz. It contains 37 personal stories describing the experience of running a first marathon. Some famous runners are included but mostly this book concentrates on the everyday runner. Each account is no longer than 10 pages so it is easy to just grab this book and fit in a short story during a break, lunch time, or right before bed. Check out the website here for even more personal stories of first marathons or to even submit your own!!

I especially enjoyed reading this book because it contained stories (on two different occasions) from a husband and wife. I liked the different point of views on the same marathon from one couple and also how one woman was inspired by her husband to run her first marathon.

A common theme seemed to radiate through most of the stories told by women - Running a marathon was an adventure of a lifetime and it rated right up there with childbirth! One particular woman talked about "fitting it all in" with family and children. She said that she found a group of other women with children and they each would take turns watching the children while the others ran which I thought was a very creative idea! Another story is about a Nun who started running and became very successful. These are just a few of the stories that fill the pages.

The story that impacted me the most was of Nina Kuscsik, the first official woman to win the Boston Marathon (in 1972) as well as an advocate for women's running. Her story is truly inspiring and shows how far women have come in sports. Along with this I didn't know much about many of the early pioneer runners but reading about some of the elite runners and their personal experiences really opened my eyes and informed me about life before running a marathon was a common thing.

Reading all the experiences of running in different places has made me want to travel even more and experience the landscapes and scenery while running. I highly recommend this book as an easy, relaxing read which will motivate you to get out there and run!

It is a beautiful day here this morning - warm and in the 50s. It is supposed to get up to the 60s this afternoon! It is weird going to work when it's light out! Have a good day!!

Sunny Sunday

I woke up this morning at 830am and was happy to have the extra hour from day-light savings time! I didn't run yesterday - it was cold and gross out but I couldn't just lie around again today. It was a cold crisp morning (39 degrees!) but I pulled on the spandex and under armour along with my gloves and headed out. I mapped out the mileage before hand and was going to do an out and back (out 3.6 miles). Well when I got to the turnaround I looked at my time and I was pretty sure that the one way mileage was more like 4 miles. When I got home I re-mapped it and sure enough it was 3.94 miles! Making my full run about 7.9 miles.

It felt really good to get out there and run the distance again. I had knee pain again but only for the last mile or so and it wasn't anything significant to worry about; probably just that my knees not used to the distance. The sun was out, it was a beautiful run. The only weird thing was that about 1.5 miles in my shoulder started to ache. I have gotten this pain before and usually it goes away because I just ignore it but it sure is annoying!!

The reason I felt ok skipping the run yesterday and doing it today was that at Fridays practice my legs felt tired. We didn't do much but they felt beat up so I decided they needed to rest. I think it was well worth it.

7.9 miles in 1:05:06 (8:14 pace)

Two other things - I finished my book! I will be posting the review tomorrow! And I made a home-made apple pie yesterday. B-Rabbit had never had one so I also made it for him, and now he says he loves apple pie!!

Enjoy the day! I can't wait to read all the NYC Marathon race reports!!
