Beginning of the end

Well I am officially into my new apartment (with my lovely new roommate JoJo) but the only problem is that I don't have any bedroom furniture yet. Hopefully it will be delivered this week...

Friday was my last long run before the Boilermaker 15k in two weeks from today. I set out early to avoid the sun, but it was still hot out. I did a simple out and back loop-de-loop of just under 9 miles on a pretty flat course. Around 6 miles my knees were really hurting and I finally had to stop at an intersection with less than a mile to go. I feel like I just need new sneakers but I was thinking maybe I could just get some gel insets to wear for the race and then get new sneakers after that??

8.9 miles in 1:13:24 (8:15 pace)

After the run I had trouble walking down the stairs, my quads were so sore! I woke up Saturday and went for a recovery run which turned into a super slow jog around the block. My legs would not move at all and its a good thing that I had today off from running so I could rest up!

Tomorrow starts my "taper" of sorts for the 15k and also tomorrow is my first day of work! I have my outfit all picked out and I am ready to go! I am a little bit nervous but really the first day can't be that hard...right??!! So tomorrow is a big day in a lot of ways!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

I'd get the new shoes. I always find new shoes to be "springier" and thus faster on race day...It may just be in my head.

More importantly, however, is to run your taper workouts in good shoes. You don't want to start the race injured. If your knees continue to give you trouble, ice them after your workouts. Keep your runs easy and taper down. Things will likely work themselves out if you give them some TLC.

Hey girl - I would get the new shoes. If you feel like you need one, I wouldn't hesitate. You don't want to get injuried before your race!

get the new shoes. if you get the same kind you don't need a lot "breaking in" before the race. your knees will thank you.

Congrats on moving into the new place and good luck with 1st day of work! How exciting!!!!

Definitely grab some inserts if you don't get new shoes first!! And be sure to test them out with plenty of time, they're all veryyyy different.

Good luck on your first day tomorrow!!!

Getting new shoes will be better in the long run. Pun intended. Great pace or the long run!

I hope your first day of work today goes well!

And looks like I'm in the minority here... but I wouldnt get new shoes before the race, unless you can get a good 20-30 miles on them before the race. I find that new shoes take a little breaking in sometimes. Just my opinion, though.

I'd try the inserts and see if that helps so you don't have to race in a new pair of shoes.

Good luck at the new job!!!

That is awesome speed! I am 'tapering' for a 15K too, it's the second longest distance I've ever run...
Yay for your new place, and good luck on your job! :)

It might be the shoes, depedning on how many miles you've ran in them, but to be safe I would also try to ice those knees. Good luck on the race and good luck on the first day of work too, that should be exciting!

Aren't you the one who buys shoes at 250 miles? :o) With as much as you run, that's about every month. You probably are due. :o)
